3 legged race

I took the dog for our morning walk

stopped to look at the purple columbine

and then we saw this rabbit just past 

the wild roses. That's as close as I got

before she ran at the rabbit who leaped

freely into those weeds. Unfortunately

our nimble hound slipped on the gravel

and ended up limping home on three legs.

4 mornings ago

Four mornings ago, I woke up at 2 AM from a 

very bizarre sci-fi dream. I wrote down some 

notes in the dark to start working it into a story. 

Then that very day at the library, a book that I 

requested arrived: THE SEARCH FOR PHILIP 

K. DICK, written by his third wife Anne Dick. 

He has long been a writing model for me, a 

teacher and inspiration. He says in this book 

that it takes 20-30 years to succeed as a 

literary writer, which may be true. 

(I finished my first novel in 1988 and have 

written over thirty since then, so I’m still waiting.) 

Even as I’m writing my sci-fi story based on my 

dream, while also working on a new novel featuring 

two robots, reading this book is real interesting 

and reminds me to stay on track.

I watched 

THE CRYSTAL BALL (1943)

one of those old romantic movies.

I really like the setting 

the busy downtown street

with the shooting gallery next to

the fortune teller shop. 

I also like that tiny car 

Ray Milland drives. 

In fact, it made it into 

my dream last night.

I parked it near the curb

picked it up like cardboard

and pulled it closer. 

Black Elk book

I’ve been reading Black Elk Speaks

before going to sleep and getting

very intense dreams. There’s so much

going on in this book to think about.

It’s also very much a part of today.

Oh, my son and I finally finished

reading Mr. Roald Dahl’s wonderful book

DANNY, THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD

a book which of course all fathers love,

as it ends with those memorable words:

“What I have been trying so hard to tell you all

along is simply that my father, without the slightest

doubt, was the most marvelous exciting father any

boy ever had.” As the Cowardly Lion once said,

“Shucks folks, I’m speechless…”
