another Kennedy page

Another page from Kennedy,
illustrated by Fred Sodt.
This is when Avery and his
rocket-gang crash at the cemetery
and he sees the weeping angel
statue (a real life Bellingham
phenomenon!).

space is the place

Watched an old summer blockbuster,
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
with the kids. I remember seeing this
many moons ago at Northgate. Also
reading a very interesting book about the
great Sun Ra, called Space is the Place.
That book is quite a journey too. Was
lucky enough to see him and his
arkestra at the Backstage.

space race

This weekend I finished reading two books
What Truth Sounds Like and Ray Bradbury:
The Last Interview and we watched 2001,
which I haven't seen in years and is better
than ever.

this is another life

I've been reading Ray Bradbury
and he reminded me of this old poem
from Another Life.

This is Who

So this is who walks around at 2 AM
in the neighborhood all blacked out
except for the tall amber street lamps
spaced every block and a half
I’m out walking the baby
in charge of wide-eyed insomnia
when the leaves of the willow
rattle behind us and ahead
a rabbit darts over the street
silent as a dream going home
to sleeping home

the vinegar syndrome

I just read a very interesting new book
about collecting and preserving movies,
A Thousand Cuts, by Bartok & Joseph.
(I didn't know about the vinegar syndrome,
which sounds like a Perry Mason title).

waldo

Enjoyed Kim Deitch's book Alias the Cat
featuring the return of his star feline
Waldo. Amazing imagination.

hunter

Celebrated the holiday by reading
new book, Hunter S. Thompson: The Last
Interview. "The American government
is the greatest enemy of freedom around
the world," he said back in 2002. Alas.

Chans

I watched Dark Alibi (1946)
one of the last Charlie Chan
movies starring Sidney Toler.
It involved the same mystery
as Stephen King's latest book
The Outsider, where a man
who is innocent has left his
fingerprints at the scene of a crime.
When I saw The Chinese Ring (1947)
the first in series starring Roland
Winters taking over role as Chan,
it seemed curious that nobody in
the cast (especially family and
Birmingham) noticed that he had
changed. (This also happened
previously with Warner Oland
as first Chan). I'm inspired by
that idea of a reincarnated
detective.
