excerpt from new film noir novel

A rocket car roared by close, a hot wind and reek of kerosene, and Howard held on tightly to the pitching cardboard sail. It almost got away from him, it was like hauling in a fishing net. When he could rest it back on its wheels, there was no sign of Dorothy, she had vanished with the breeze.

film noir novel

What's new with Good Deed Rain? Well, I finished writing a new novel, the film noir about witches in a raining black and white city. Just need to type it up and do some drawings. It's a good one! Stay tuned for more.

GRUMP safety

more about GRUMP

In 1965, Roger Price published his own magazine, Grump, subtitled “For people who are against all the DUMB THINGS going on.” It was a tabloid on thick paper, 16 pages in two colors, with no advertising. Price contributed his own material, like an article on pet clams. There were many short articles and cartoons, mostly more satirical than Price, mostly from a decidedly Greenwich Village perspective. http://ullagegroup.com/2016/08/24/memorable-magazines-6-grump/

rocket witch

This is a scene from the next Good Deed Rain novel that I'm currently writing. I'm nearly done with it. It's a detective story with witches. She rides a broom, he drives a rocket car.

Puttering Afterword

THE PUTTERING MARVEL also includes an Afterword. This is something I admired in Stephen King's short story collections, where he spoke about the inspirations and making of each story. So here's the first page spread of my Afterword. Hope you've enjoyed these teasers and hope it interests you in uncovering all of this new Good Deed Rain book. Thanks for reading!

GRUMP

GRUMP magazine, from 1966, with the riveting article "How your navel reveals your character." I don't know anything about this publication but I'm sure it was a hit at the dentist office.

Martians at the IHOP

A page spread from the story "Other Flavors" appearing in THE PUTTERING MARVEL. A typical meal at the IHOP.

Starting Flavors

The start of the 9th story in THE PUTTERING MARVEL. (This story takes place in a ghastly Seattle apartment I once lived in. There oughta be a plaque on the sidewalk! This story also commemorates my memory of watching The Lost Continent on the little black and white TV they had in the kitchen).

River Review

Larry Smith wrote a great Amazon review of RIVER ROAD: "This is a quiet gem and a blend of fiction, poetry, and line drawing. Allen Frost has been sharing his vision through his poetry, fiction, and line drawings for a couple decades now. And this book, like the others goes back in time to recreate the questions and wonder of youth, here a paperboy finding his way and self through the world close around him. Frost's drawings are as delightful as his prose." Thanks Larry!

Rodari Radar

I've been very inspired by this recent article in The New Yorker magazine about the Italian writer, Gianni Rodari: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/12/14/the-italian-genius-who-mixed-marxism-and-childrens-literature
