James Dean sighting
Director Nicholas Ray remembers going to Jacques Tati’s ‘Jour det Fete’ with James Dean:
“Unshaven and hair tousled, wrapped in a black raincoat with glasses perched on the very tip of his nose, he looked morose as he entered the cinema. After ten minutes, he was laughing so hard that the spectators next to him complained. He ignored them: there was nothing else to do, the urge to laugh and the euphoria becoming increasingly irresistible. He had to leave before the film was over, leaping over ashtrays in the side aisle like hedges. Outside in the street, he stopped at a bakery. On the sidewalk, éclair in hand, he took on the appearance of Tati's postman, perfectly recreating his elongated stride, slightly Groucho-like---his questioning face with lottery ball eyes.”
