more NYC journal
Here's another excerpt from the NYC journal,
this time from early March 1989:
Going up in the elevator with me is a man who
saw Ella Fitzgerald sing at the Apollo. He is
trying to impress the woman next to him. When
the doors open and she leaves on the 3rd floor,
he calls after her, "Don't you know who
Chick Webb is?" I say I do, but he doesn't
answer. I can't believe after all these years
he's still using this as a pickup line, never
knowing it's become a mothballed movie theater.
