hummingword
Writing this morning beside the window, our friendly ruby throated hummingbird reminds me that the feeder is empty.
June 30
Today is the official publication date for my newest novel, THE TRILLIUM WITCH. (You can order from me, or secretly from Amazon) I chose this day to honor one of my favorite Brautigan books, June 30, June 30 published last century in 1978.

moon
The clay Caruso moon. Mike and I got the star background effect by leaving little unpainted holes on the black glass and shining a lightbulb through.
4 days to Trillium
With only 4 days until THE TRILLIUM WITCH novel is officially published and born into the world, I found this online:
"Trillium is also called Birthroot. It is used in certain circumstances in the process of labor and birth by midwives. In Native American herbalism, Trillium root is considered to be a sacred female herb and they only spoke of it to their medicine women. Trillium is also related to the first three chakras—cleansing them of fear, and opening the way to full grounding."

file under fiction
Back in ye olde schooldays, when I worked in the library, I used to make fake cards for the card catalog. I wonder if anyone ever found those...

TIN CAN SLEEP INTERRUPTION
This morning is garbage day. Deep in the night, on the highway past our backyard, machines are banging away at I-5, opening a way for salmon to swim under the highway. The wind always blows on garbage day. At 4 AM, we had to close the window. A tin can kept rattling back and forth beside the curb. If anyone would appreciate that sound, it would be John Cage. He would be lying down in the grass, making a field recording, capturing it on a spool of tape labeled “Tin Can Sleep Interruption.”

This is the secret passage the rabbit is taking through our fence. One of these days, I'm expecting to find a tiny blue jacket left behind.

update
What's next with Good Deed Rain? Well, there's the cosmonaut novel that aims to be published by end of summer. That was a fun one to write. And I just started writing a new novel--12 pages in--that was inspired by Encyclopedia Brown of all things! So stay tuned, more thrilling reading for you on the way.

JGenius reviews SOMETHING BRIGHT
A nice poem review of SOMETHING BRIGHT from JGenius, thank you. With a photo of my Uncle Charlie:
"I've been re-reading something right this evening as a lovely respite from this grading, and I am very much enjoying the smoke. Old Uncle Charlie, with his pipes. Brava. mon frere brava and grazi."

south of the border
This weekend, the dog and I walked into a field and encountered a crow with a snake in its beak. I realized it was exactly like Mexico's flag!
